SNUGABUB Features in the Sunshine Coast Daily - Hey, hey baby, look at us now!

Fiona Dique says she's not surprised by the wild success of a special cot sheet for babies that she designed with her sister and cousin.

Why should she be?

Any product that supposedly results in extra and safer sleep for newborns and their parents is bound to disappear off the shelves quicker than you can say rock-a-bye baby.

Fiona, sister Alison and cousin Natalie Wendt formed a business, cutely called Kumpny, less than a year ago. Their first product is the Snugabub cot sheet, which is much shorter than the traditional, toddler-size sheets.

“We all felt the way we were sleeping our kids could be done better and that excess bedding was still giving us a bit of anxiety,” Fiona said.

“We talked to other mothers and midwives who all thought it was great; and then we took a huge leap of faith to develop it, create a web page and find a market.”

The 100% cotton sheets are made in India, while the accompanying blankets are made in Australia. They are stocked all over the country and in Bubs Baby Shops in Queensland and New South Wales. There are also contacts in the United Kingdom and United States, with the businesswomen keen to appoint agents and ship stock to those countries.

A distributor is on board in Australia, allowing the home-based business to tap into its solid, existing network of retail outlets.

“We are now concentrating on our product awareness through obstetricians, midwives, medical centres and pharmacies,” Fiona said. “We would also like to refine it before we do anything else.

“The success hasn't surprised us because we believe in it. We believe it's better for infants and that we are filling a gap.”

The sheet has also been featured on the ABC-TV program The New Inventors.

The three women have backgrounds in IT, banking, marketing, retail and design and are all parents themselves.

They have a goal to launch another nine products in the next two years, all designed to be innovative and to help parents and children.

The trio say their top tips for business are: be passionate for your customer, for your product and for strategic business growth; consider and know the risks; work smarter not harder and always be open to learn and expand your knowledge.

“It is such an exciting time when starting business, and I think it is even better doing it as a team given we all bring different practical parenting ideas, career experiences and opinions to the table,” Alison said.

Local Mothers' Innovation Tailor-made for newborns news article as seen at viewnews.com.au

Sunshine Coast-based company, snugabub has launched its innovative cot sheet and blanket sets tailored to suit newborns and provide growing babies with safer and sounder sleep.

Yandina mother, Fiona Dique established snugabub along with sister, Alison and cousin, Natalie. The three mothers took inspiration from their own children in providing a range that was designed in line with safe-sleeping recommendations to offer peace of mind for parents and carers.

“While parents of newborns have access to an impressive range of baby clothes tailored to suit the length and weight of their child, cot bedding traditionally only comes in one size – toddler size,” said Fiona Dique.

“This presents a range of hazards to newborns with excess fabric increasing risks of SIDS or cot death and also makes it harder to tuck in baby securely to encourage sounder sleep.”

The premium quality 100% cotton sheets are especially tailored to the size of the baby which ensures parents or other carers have no choice but to settle the baby according to the SIDS safe sleeping principle of placing baby at the bottom of the cot.

The top sheets are innovatively designed with fitted corners at the base to stop the baby from pulling the sheet out and covering its face. The wide-angled sides keep the sheet firmly over the baby’s chest ensuring they feel secure and can easily soothe themselves back to sleep if they stir or startle due to reflex movements.

“Feedback has indicated that infants slept sounder in snugabub sheets than in any other baby bedding item including sleeping bags, from 20-45 minutes longer during daytime sleeps up to four hours longer at night time,” said Fiona.

“As mothers ourselves, we knew the priority was to come up with bedding that was not only safe for babies and toddlers but also helped end the sleepless nights by promoting deeper sleep as a result of baby feeling snug and secure.”

The sheets are made of 100% soft premium cotton, are machine washable and retail at $77 for the set of four sheets – a fitted base sheet and three top sheets; one for newborns, infants and toddlers.

They form part of the snugabub full nursery bedding range which also includes pure cotton, thermal cellular blankets designed using the same principles as the sheets.

Innovative sheets revolutionise nursery bedding

snugabub’s innovative tailored cot sheets will revolutionise how parents and carers put their newborns to bed by helping to provide safer and sounder sleep.

While parents of newborns have access to an impressive range of baby clothes tailored to suit the length and weight of their child, cot bedding traditionally only comes in one size – toddler size.   This presents a range of hazards to newborns with excess fabric increasing risks of SIDS or cot death, which is why the innovative mums at snugabub developed a set of four tailored cot sheets to suit a growing baby.

“Feedback has indicated that infants slept sounder in snugabub sheets than in any other baby bedding item including sleeping bags, from 20-45 minutes longer during daytime sleeps up to four hours longer at night time,” said Alison Dique, who started snugabub in partnership with her sister and cousin.

“As mothers ourselves, we knew the priority was to come up with bedding that was not only safe for babies and toddlers but also helped end the sleepless nights by promoting deeper sleep as a result of baby feeling snug and secure.”

The sheets are made of 100% soft premium cotton, are machine washable and retail at $77 for the set of four sheets – a fitted base sheet and three top sheets; one for newborns, infants and toddlers.

snugabub delivers safe and sound sleep for babies

Parents of newborn babies always have a lingering fear with regard to SIDS and the safety of their babies when they are tucked up in bed at night.  To help alleviate this anxiety, snugabub has launched a collection of cot sheets designed in line with recommendations by the SIDS and Kids Organisation safe sleeping program to keep baby safe and sleeping more soundly.

The innovative snugabub cot set includes four premium quality 100% cotton sheets especially designed for as baby grows – a fitted base sheet and three top sheets; one for newborns, infants and toddlers.

The bedding is tailored to the size of the baby which ensures parents or other carers have no choice but to settle the baby according to the SIDS safe sleeping principle of placing baby at the bottom of the cot.

The top sheets are innovatively designed with fitted corners at the base to stop the baby from pulling the sheet out and covering their face.  The wide-angled sides keep the sheet firmly over the baby’s chest ensuring they feel secure and can easily soothe themselves back to sleep if they stir or startle due to reflex movements.

One size fits all Not for newborn babies
A new baby bedding design recognises the unique requirements of babies by tailoring bedding that does away with excess fabric reducing the danger of suffocation.

The new and unique bedding ensemble builds on the SIDS and Kids Organisation's 'Reduce the Risks' education campaign.

SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - is the leading cause of death in infants aged over one month and under one year.

In 1990 The SIDS and Kids Organization launched the ‘Reduce the Risks’ education program.  Since inception, this program has taken on many forms yet its focus has remained; educate parents and the community about safe sleeping.  The campaign has had a positive impact with the number of SIDS related infant deaths reducing by more than 50% through educating parents.

Snugabub has taken this safe sleeping message one step further and has created baby bedding that ‘makes you’ sleep your baby at the base of the cot.  This design that supports the educational campaign of the SIDS and Kids organization is the only one of its kind so has a patent application filed.

Snugabub is tailored bedding. Just as you buy clothing depending on the age or size of your baby, snugabub are uniquely designed for the growth of your baby, up to 18 months of age.  You simply change the sheet to the larger size as your baby gets bigger.

Another benefit is they are made of natural fibres; 100% premium quality cotton.  With the manufacturing process finishing the sheet off to ensure it is soft for your baby’s skin. Snugabub is complimented by your choice of or a 100% thermal cotton blanket.

Snugabub features:

Designed for a baby sleeping with their feet at the base of the cot

Tailored to the length of a growing baby – no excess fabric to fold over or tuck away.

Fitted base sheet and fitted bottom corners of top sheet; reducing risk of tangling.

Angled tailored sides for a firm tuck-in and snug sleep.

100% soft percale cotton.

Neutral colour to compliment any nursery.
